Focus question: In patients with opioid-related hospital stays, how does opioid-related spending compared to other hospital-stay visits, affects the hospital financially and interfere with patient’s outcome?

Significance of the Problem:

The impact of the overdose problem on patient outcomes highlights its significance.

Overdose-related deaths and disabilities significantly impact mortality and morbidity rates

among drug users. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 2021 drug

overdoses resulted in an estimated 107,622 fatalities in the United States, with opioids being the

leading cause of such occurrences (CDC, 2022). As mentioned above, the statistic underscores

the pressing necessity for efficacious interventions and healthcare strategies to mitigate the

incidence and aftermath of overdose.

Moreover, the crisis of opioid overdose has implications that extend beyond national

borders. Research has identified three distinct groupings of overdose prevalence on a global

scale. The initial cluster comprises nations helmed by the United States, which have exhibited

historically elevated levels of opioid overdose. The countries within the second cluster indicate a

rising trend in overdose rates that falls within a worrisome range. According to Krausz et al.

(2021), the third cluster is composed of nations that exhibit notably low overdose rates. The

discoveries mentioned above underscore that overdose is not confined to particular geographical

Introduction:

The opioid crisis has become a significant concern in the healthcare industry, leading to a surge in hospital admissions. This has led to a pressing need for effective interventions and healthcare strategies to mitigate the incidence and aftermath of overdose. In this context, this paper will discuss the impact of opioid-related hospital stays on hospital finances and patients’ outcomes compared to other hospital stay visits.

Answer:

In patients with opioid-related hospital stays, the opioid-related spending is significantly higher than other hospital stay visits, affecting the hospital’s financial stability. According to a study conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), opioid-related inpatient stays accounted for approximately $15 billion in hospital costs in the United States in 2018 (AHRQ, 2021). This has resulted in a considerable financial burden on hospitals, affecting their profitability and sustainability.

In addition to impacting hospital finances, opioid-related hospital stays also interfere with patient outcomes. Patients with opioid-related hospital stays have a higher risk of medical complications, longer hospital stays, and higher readmission rates, leading to poorer health outcomes (AHRQ, 2021). The impact of opioid addiction on patients’ outcomes can be severe, leading to disability, morbidity, and mortality.

Therefore, it is essential to implement effective interventions and healthcare strategies to mitigate the incidence and aftermath of opioid addiction. This includes strategies to reduce opioid prescriptions, alternative pain management approaches, and appropriate use of opioid agonist treatment (OAT) (AHRQ, 2021). Implementation of these interventions can reduce the financial burden on hospitals and improve patients’ outcomes, leading to better health outcomes and reduced mortality rates.
